Etiquette for Traditional Poker
- Be as polite as possible. Imagine you're playing with your best friend or with your boss. Always think about the quality of you game, bad form can really spoil it.
- Don't throw your chips into the middle so that nobody can count how much you put in. In other words, keep your chips in a neat pile in front of you until it's time to move everyone's chips into the middle. This helps keep track of where things stand. Move your chips neatly towards the dealer, this way you can help avoid some nasty arguments. Throwing your chips into the middle is always a bad idea.
- Don't curse the dealer. It's not his fault that you are a bad player or you don't like your hand.
- Rely on the dealer if you don't know how to read your hand. Especially if you are an inexperienced player. It doesn't mean that you can ask for help from everyone at the table. It's a very bad form.
- One player - one hand. Never ever try to give advice. It's better both for you and for your opponents. Sit quietly and let the hand end before you offer any comments, no matter how good you believe them to be.
- Don't play too slowly. This makes the game less exciting and the players less polite. Don't use this tactic if you don't want bad reputation.
- Don't pocket the chips. Keep them stacked neatly in front of you.
- Act only when it is time to act! In other words - don't fold when it's not you turn. Even if you're not interested in the game. This can give additional information to your opponents and it's unfair to the other players if someone gets to know that you're going to fold out of turn. The same holds true for calling and raising.
- Don't eat at the poker table. Choose whether to eat or to play. Others don't want to touch greasy cards and probably you dont either! Dirt or grease on the cards also makes them less playable.
- Always show your winning hand and let everybody see why they had lost.
- Don't expose your cards to everyone when playing.
- Pay attention. Few things are more aggravating than a player who says, "Whose turn is it?" when it's been their turn for several minutes.
